A fully automated irrigation system
Watermatic were brought in to deliver a fully automated irrigation system for The Shard Place, one of London’s most exclusive residential developments.
With planting spread across elevated terraces and podium levels, the landscape needed a reliable, low-maintenance solution that would keep the landscape healthy year-round—an essential requirement for any high-end landscape design or urban planting scheme.

Why Irrigation Matters for Landscape Projects
We designed and installed a drip-based irrigation system controlled by a Rain Bird ESP-LXIVM smart controller with IVM modules. This setup delivers consistent moisture levels across beds, planters, trees and feature pots, helping the landscape establish quickly and thrive long-term.
The perfect system for rooftop gardens, podium landscapes, residential developments, and commercial outdoor spaces where reliable, automated water management is crucial. With automatic adjustments and intelligent flow monitoring, it reduces water waste, supports sustainable design and simplifies maintenance. Key considerations for today’s sustainable landscape architecture.
Many premium landscapes such as The Shard Place, face similar challenges:
- Limited soil volumes and challenging growing conditions
- Wind-exposed rooftop or terrace environments
- Restricted access for manual watering
- High-value planting that needs consistent care
This type of system provides a proven solution that aligns with the goals of landscape architects, garden designers, property managers, and development teams looking to protect their planting investment.
Automated irrigation helps deliver:
- Healthier, more resilient planting
- Lower risk of plant loss and replacement costs
- Reduced maintenance requirements
- Smarter, data-driven water management
- Better long-term performance of the landscape design
Future-Proofed Irrigation for High-Quality Landscape Design
Our work at The Shard Place demonstrates how intelligent, automated irrigation supports complex landscape schemes and enhances long-term performance. For any project where plant health, sustainability and reliability matter, a professionally designed irrigation system is one of the most effective ways to protect both the landscape vision and the overall investment.
